"4 out of 5 young people find advice from organisations unhelpful, Seeking alternative advice from people they know."

source: National Youth Agency

The situation as it stands:

1 in 5 YP are NEET (source: Dept of Education). Tackling this is a current priority for many local authorities and central government, as highlighted in the recent 'Positive for Youth' policy document. Through local organisations in Camden, we have been working with disadvantaged young people aged 14 to 19 who have low or no qualifications and little work experience. They are struggling to find work or training and many have poor self-esteem, low aspirations and little confidence. They are often at a greater disadvantage in the job market, having difficulty writing CVs, securing interviews and understanding what employers are looking for. Presenting and communicating transferable employability strengths is a challenge that FLiP aims to help with.

In the Government's recent (2012) youth policy for 13-19 year olds, they have outlined the important role of youth workers and youth services supporting young people's personal and social development as part of their pathway to employment. We believe they play an important role too but we don't believe that enough is being done with digital technologies.

What and how we know about it:

  • Through local organisations in Camden, we have been working with disadvantaged young people aged 14 to 19 who have low or no qualifications and little work experience.
  • Young people are struggling to find work or training. Many have poor self-esteem, low aspirations and low confidence.
  • Presenting and communicating transferable employability strengths is a challenge that FLiP has identified and aims to help with.
  • Young people are often at a greater disadvantage in the job market, having difficulty writing CVs, securing interviews and understanding what employers are looking for. Creating a FLiP profile wil address all these issues.
